our process

Equal parts artistry, fabrication and chemistry

Flopping Fish handcrafts each work to exacting detail. None of our products are mass-produced or imported. Instead, we embrace every detail from pattern to polish.

Artistry
All work is done by the hands of artist Lisa Young. From initial sketches to pattern renderings, she weaves her fine art background with her appreciation for old world tapestries to create distinction in every design. Our extraordinary attention to detail ensures your purchase is an individually etched or silk-screened work of art that employs absolutely no stamping, laser cutting or mass production.

Fabrication
This step begins with a large sheet of metal that we screen the final hand-drawn pattern onto. The unetched pieces are pierced using finely tuned machinery and sheared into separate plates. The etched copper and galvanized pieces undergo the same separation but are put through an acid bath beforehand. Every corner on a Flopping Fish switch plate is individually cut by hand for a precise, uniform finish.

Chemistry
The final amalgamation is what elevates Flopping Fish products from the rest. We apply a uniquely engineered proprietary solution to each copper product repeatedly over the course of five days. This produces an antique, weathered effect that only time or Mother Nature could duplicate.

Our commitment
Flopping Fish products are as elegant as they are functional. All pieces are finished by hand for a unique patina unequalled in quality. Our commitment to artistry and craftsmanship translates to a worthwhile investment for your home or workspace.
